This piece was inspired by the Fabergé Show at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. I saw a small crystal seal at the show, and wanted one for myself. My first mistake was carving it from chalcedony rather than quartz crystal. This was the hardest rock that I have carved to date, harder by far than any jade, jadeite or topaz that I’ve worked with. The base and cabochons are Texas agate, the chalcedony is also from Texas and the turritella’s origins are uncertain. The metal is bronze.
