I am a native Houstonian and have been involved in the Fine Arts most of my life, taking occasional vacations from it to work as a legal secretary/paralegal. I attended the Museum of Fine Arts School (now the Glassel School), Houston Community College, St. Thomas University, and the University of Houston in their Block Painting Program. I have taken independent art classes in portraiture, drawing, painting and enameling.
Although most of my training and work was two-dimensional in nature, I always had an innate ability to sculpt. I taught art-doll sculpting at Houston Community College, Michael’s and Hobby Lobbies in several locations in the Houston area. During this time, I participated in a three artist show at Houston Baptist University, won blue ribbons for doll sculpting, had work in Urban Artifacts and Hanson Gallery and belonged to the Polymer Clay Guild.
I have painted murals and furniture for designers and clients, and done graphic work for West Oaks and Cypress Creek Hospitals, Prism Psychotherapy, and designed book covers for a doctor.
I began carving wood about fourteen years ago and as a member of the Houston Area Woodcarvers and won several blue ribbons and a best of show. I began carving gemstones nine years ago and began incorporating them and some wood pieces into jewelry. I had some training in metal working (as a minor in college) and began doing lost wax casting when I started carving gemstones.
I was an Artist in Residence at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft from July thru December of 2007. While there, I had work in the Asher Gallery and participated in “Fresh Metal”, a juried show, hosted by the Houston Metal Arts Guild.
I have been a demonstrator of gemstone carving at two of the Fabergé Symposiums at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
I have had work in the Houston Museum of Fine Arts Pearl Fincher Gallery in their “Metal Worked” show in 2008. I also had work in the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in the “In Residence: Works by 2007 Artists in Residence” in 2008.
I am a member of the GIA, Gem Artists of North America, Houston Gem and Mineral Society, several online carving forums and the Houston Metal Arts Guild.
